First we arrived in Zagreb, still jet lagged from the flight from Oz to Holland (only stayed 2 days in Holland). We arrived on Wednesday in the middle of the night I think (don't even remember!) and the next day we went around to have a look in the city. It's a beautiful city with many old buildings. We were able to find some vegan food and in the evening we found an Indian restaurant with some good food.
But the next day, Friday, we had to travel to Rijeka (spelling?). We went with my boyfriends cousin and had to travel for about 4 hours.
When we arrived we got picked up from the station and had a drink there. That restaurant was full of smoke.
We were brought to the place of a cousin where they had a kindergarten and there were some people waiting there. There was going to be a wedding from another cousin and there was going to be a big party.
No one spoke English and there was nothing to do there, so I just slept.
After some time more people came and I came out to meet them. Non of them really interested in me.
There was a little boy sitting at a table trying to catch a wasp. When he did (under a cup) he said: 'he's going to die soon.' Later he asked: 'when is the pig coming?'
Wonder what upbringing that brad had, he's only 10. The kid always over ate himself on pig and other disgusting stuff so he was extremely overweight.
Now luckily they didn't bring in a life pig to slaughter (I've heard they sometimes do) but there was this amount of chunks of chopped up carcasses spreaded all over the tables.
People all smoked like chimneys and drank like hell, and all they ate was this meat and a bit of bread and salad that was everyday the same: tomato, onion, cucumber.
On the wedding, this was Saturday, there was another long day of people just eating themselves to death and after the wedding there was a dinner, but I didn't even make it trough the dinner, I wanted to sleep a bit in the car but somehow I woke up next morning back in the apartment where I stayed, not even had any dinner. Sounds like I had been drunk LOL, but I was just dead tired.
Sunday was another day of chomping away on meat and all the rest of the stuff. There was this huge group of people and they all wanted to go to the beach. So we went. They were all so rude to me (the ones that did speak English), I don't know why, I have tried to be so nice to them (even while that is very hard)
The rest of the days went on and on, we tried to explain that I can't keep up with their pace since I have a chronic illness, but they just didn't understand.
On Monday we moved to the kindergarten house to stay there. And all those days the people kept on eating, drinking and whatever.
It's very interesting to see the results of The China Study (remember the thread I stared about that book?) there in full proof. Nearly no old people! All people over 30 look a bit sickly and when they are middle aged they are extremely overweight. It seemed there were maybe some people in their 50's and 60's, but barely any over that age.
One thing that really stood out and sickened me greatly was that little boy again, when he started showing pictures on his camera, he had pictures of pigs being castrated without sedation. Someone asked him: 'do they squeal?' What a question. Disgusting idiots.
These people had been eating on that pig carcass from Friday till Wednesday, unbelievable they didn't get food poisening.
There was another little boy, he was very skinny so someone told him to eat more. Guess what he said: 'even if you f*ck*d me I couldn't eat more.' He said that to an adult! Such neanderthals, I couldn't believe they existed like this.
After this ordeal, we were supposed to travel on to the countryside with the same group of morons and it was said that the country side was even worse then were we stayed before. So made my decision and went back. The thing that topped it off was that they all were so rude and unfriendly to me and even one lady was racist (talking about Asians and not knowing I'm partly Asian)
One of this things that is also hard to cope with is that they always say: 'oh relax, we have all the time', and then they suddenly decide out of the blue to go somewhere. They change their plans every 10 minutes!
My poor boyfriend is still there because he felt it was rude to leave. He has this very old aunty who he will never see again and he wanted to spend some more time with her.
I guess if I hadn't stayed with these people and we had traveled on our own it could have been good. In the restaurants they make really nice vegan food when you ask for it :-)

Re: Terrible holiday experience in Croatia....
Sat, August 11, 2007 - 4:37 PMDon't feel bad! You're not the only one who had a frustrating time when you went on vacation.
I had a very similar frustrating time in Russia. I was so upset because I didn't have enough to eat. It's so important for me to take good care of my body, that I got upset because I wasn't eating enough. I slept most of the time I was there. I spent 9 days there. I sat and cried in the hotel room one morning. Besides the food though, there are some nice things about Russia. I have a very good friend who lives there. She's an artist, and very sweet and I had a fun time walking around Moscow with someone my age, taking pictures.
After Moscow, I spent 3 days in Amsterdam, and that was luxury! Hot water whenever you want, plenty of vegan food.....there was a fantastic organic vegetarian restaurant that had a number of vegan options.I had a coconut curry stir-fry that was amazing. I've never enjoyed eating so much in my life! -

Re: Terrible holiday experience in Croatia....
Wed, August 15, 2007 - 2:13 PMyeah, after I came home, I realized what a luxury it is to have a co-op, Whole Foods, and tons of ethnic grocery stores. The local Kosher grocery stores has tons of Tofutti items-the vegan ice cream sandwiches come in all kinds of flavors. I didn't realize they had so many flavors until I went to the Kosher grocery store(I can't remember the name at the moment).
