Vegan Bellydancers--what cosmetics do you use for performances?

I am addicted to black liquid eyeliner, it's so beautiful and can make my eyes look so catty. I haven't ever seen natural companies offer liquid eyeliner. I buy mine from Revlon, although I've never searched all of the ingredients in it to be sure it's vegan. Mainstream cosmetics have so many chemicals in them, I hate reading the ingredients, I don't know what most of it even means.

I'm addicted to MAC eyeshadow, blush and lip color. Once again, are the ingredients vegan? Don't buy their make-up brushes, although MAC doesn't test on animals, they use horse hair to make most of their brushes (a salesperson at a MAC counter tried to convince me that's ok, eek). I adore their make-up and hope it's vegan.

Hair products, I prefer Aveda.

I have this weird thing against "natural" make-up companies, they either use non-vegan ingredients such as honey, milk, silk protein, etc., which a lot of non-vegan vegetarians settle for, but I don't...just like other companies do, or they make cosmetics that look nice in the cases, but then make me feel like I'm smearing mud on my face. For example, the "cover-up" compacts...use it to cover up a pimple?...NO--it will look like i have brown crap on my face all around my red pimple instead. Or, the colors look nice for eyeshadow, then I pay a high price for it and it doesn't work well for theatrical looks.

Anyone find a high-quality, fairly-priced, array of vegan cosmetics? If so, please do tell.

What do all of you use?

I emailed MAC and got the following response to the question, "Are you all vegan? And if not what products should I avoid?"
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Very few animal derived raw materials are found in Mac products. Animal
ingredients are used only when their efficacy cannot be duplicated by any
other source of ingredients. When an ingredient can be obtained from
either animals or plants, we use the plant derived material.

In response to your concern, we have included a list of products that
contain animal derived ingredients. If you have any further questions
regarding other products, feel free to respond to this email and we will
    forward you comprehensive ingredient listings.

Products that CONTAIN Animal Derived Ingredients
Amplified Creme Lipstick - lanolin oil
    Cream Lipstick - beeswax
    Cheek Hue - beeswax
    Eye Kohl - beeswax
    Frost Lipstick - beeswax
    Glaze Lipstick - beeswax
Lustre Lipstick - lanolin and beeswax
    Satin Lipstick - beeswax
    Studio Stick Concealer - beeswax

I just ordered some concealer and mascara from this company:
      www.purebodysolutions.com/
I have been detoxing since I returned from Greece in Oct. I can definitely tell a difference in my body and mood since getting rid of so much junk out of my system. I will let you all know how their products are. I ordered the organic Company's Conceler and the mascara from real Purity. Seems like they have some pretty good stuff. I like their committment statement on their page regarding purity and no animal testing.
I can also tell a difference in my hair since I stopped coloring it. The silver is coming in so well and the texture is so nice.

Beauty Without Cruelty makes a great liquid liner. Urban Decay has some vegan items that they identify. The founder of which company is a vegan?
Shadia, as a half Greek person, I hope it wasn't being in Greece that made you need to detox?!

          Carolena,

Heavens, no it wasn't Greece that made me need to detox!!!! It was being on vacation and my life before; years of hair dye, medications I'd been on for 16+ years and your typical American diet and lifestyle. Although, I must admit I did drink too much ouzo and raki(sp) and I also ate a lot of different things I don't usually eat. One of my best friends has a condo on one of the Cyclades and it was the trip of a lifetime for me. I truly loved the island life and the people. I could live on this island and may very well end up there if Stavroula, my buddy, has anything to say about it. I hope to go back again this year and hopefully learn a little Greek so I can communicate a little better. Opa!!!

I contacted The Body Shop and inquired about their cosmetics. This is the response I received:

    Dear Customer,

The Body Shop(r) is not a vegetarian or vegan company. However the
    vast
majority of our products contain no animal derived ingredients.

We aim to avoid the use of animal-derived ingredients wherever possible
and specify non-animal ingredients whenever there is a choice. All our
soaps, for example, use a vegetable base rather than the commonly used
    animal-fat base.

Gelatin, beeswax, honey, milk, shellac and lanolin are the only product
ingredients knowingly used by The Body Shop(r) which do not comply with
the most current definition of Vegan. Where synthetic forms or
derivatives of these materials are available, such as lactic acid,
    these
are always specified for our formulations.

Please know that all product ingredients are posted online at
www.thebodyshop.com. Once you have clicked on the product you are
interested in, select the "All Ingredients" tab found below the
    product.

I hope you find the level of service provided to you via this
correspondence satisfactory. If you are not satisfied please feel free
to contact me at, 1-800-263-9746 ext 5667.

    Sincerely,

    Tieren

I won't shop at the Body Shop anymore because of their very suspicious labels: "This final product not tested on animals." Hmmmmm.....

I hear that about The Body Shop!
I also found The Organic Make Up Company. They have great coIors and I believe they're all-vegan as well!

I just signed up as a distributor for Arbonne skin care and cosmetics. They are 100% vegan and I've really liked their skincare products that I've used so far. I haven't tried the makeup yet, but I'm getting ready to order some from them. www.arbonne.com.

I also do not shop at the Body Shop because they are sketchy. The Organic Makeup Company that someone mentioned is great though, their products can be found at www.veganessentials.com, and other vegan makeup as well. As for MAC, I used to love their lipglass but I realized that it contains carmine which is NOT vegan as it is derived from the cochineal beetle. I don't know if they still use it because that company email didnt mention it but it could just be because they don't know since its somewhat obscure. Either way, check their labels (and any other makeup labels) becuase carmine is put in almost all cosmetics nowadays!

I've noticed that! How annoying and gross. Aside from ethical reasons, I don't want to be smearing smashed up bugs on my face!!

Ben Nye, suppliers of theatrical makeup, do not test on animals, and apart from their white base (which contains beeswax), their products supposedly do not contain animal ingredients. (Hm, I may have mentioned this on another thread...)

Ewwwwwwww, I really hope the mac lip stuff I've been using doesn't have carmine in it, that's disgusting!
Thanks for letting us know, I'll have to go the Mac counter and check some labels again.
