A couple of weeks ago I went to a workshop. The teacher (Dunya) required us to bring a silk veil, but instead, I brought a chiffon one and hoped she wouldn't notice. Well, it turns out we had to do a test for our veils, having them fall a certain way, mine failed. Dunya suggested I use a spare silk veil. I did, and I have to admit, it was much better. Does anyone have any suggestions for another fabric, that behaves relatively the same way? The chiffon is ok, but now that I've tried silk I feel I have to find something better.

Re: alternatives to a silk veil
Thu, June 1, 2006 - 7:03 AMI use chiffon. Not as big veils but smaller half circle ones. They are fine.
There is a new type of silk that is made without killing the caterpillars (the silk is made of the left over cocoons after the caterpillars came out of them naturally), I have a saree made of it and it is really beautiful material. It is a fairly new product, so I don't know if it is already available in veil like material. -

Re: alternatives to a silk veil
Sat, June 3, 2006 - 7:03 AMThanks for your response Amulya. I went to the fabric store and discovered that chiffon comes in a more delicate weight than I had previously. I'll be on the look out for the peace/eco silk that you refered to. However, it's really expensive . -

Re: alternatives to a silk veil
Wed, May 23, 2007 - 9:15 AMHas anyone tried contacting the ahimsa company to see what the price of a veil might be? I have known of this company for a while but I always shy away fearing it will be too expensive. Maybe if lots of vegan dancers request veils they would start regularly making them and prices would go down. In any case does anyone one know what they cost now? -

Re: alternatives to a silk veil
Wed, May 23, 2007 - 8:49 PMWith silk threads that are not continuous, you're never going to get the flow of the likes of china silk. You just have to be comfortable with that. Veil work can still be beautiful even if the veil isn't quite so watery-looking.
I hear they're making a new faux silk out of soy, but haven't really looked into it. I wonder what kind of silk it will imitate. -

Re: alternatives to a silk veil
Wed, May 23, 2007 - 11:47 PMI'd like to contact the company, but not sure what to ask for. You need a certain type of silk for the veils, does anyone know what it is called and how thin it should be?

Re: alternatives to a silk veil
Fri, June 22, 2007 - 9:06 AMWe are now carrying a line of synthetic chiffon veils. I'm reworking the web site so they aren't posted yet, but you can call me for colors, etc.
As for the ahimsa silk; I think the concept is interesting, but doesn't it go against the general concept of veganism being "no animal products"?
I understand that the caterpillars were not harmed, but it is still an animal product. Were the caterpillars raised and the cocoons harvested? Or were they collected from the wild, and by whom? -

Re: alternatives to a silk veil
Wed, June 27, 2007 - 9:43 PMGreat Carolina! Thank you for contributing to an ever-increasing array of vegan alternatives!
Below is a link to the Ahimsa silk FAQ page. From my view, though technically not vegan, I can see how their process is more humane and their environmental and social dedication may be something to be admired (however, I’d like to hear from other sources how the “Tribals” are fairing).
They are collecting some empty cocoons wildly from the jungle, but not in all cases. They also seem to rely upon breeders of the animals in enclosed (in some cases) environments. This to me is exploitation. It was also unclear to me if they were ‘piercing’ the cocoons or just collecting them after they’ve vacated them.
It’s a slippery slope whenever humans are involved in any kind of cultivation. Even when plants are harvested, so many insects are killed by pesticides or through other non-chemical treatments if they are organically grown. There are just so many layers to what and how we consume.
Peace-
